What is the Hyperbolic Crochet Coral Reef Project?

It is a work of art, a connection to nature, a way to bring community together and a way to learn about all the great things that we all can do to make a difference to the environment. Created by Margaret and Christine Wertheim of the Institute For Figuring (IFF), the Hyperbolic Crochet Coral Reef Project is a woolly celebration of the intersection of higher geometry and feminine handicraft. The Scottsdale Public Art Program is thrilled to bring the IFF installation to our community and to debut the Scottsdale Reef, created by more than two hundred crocheters, crafters, and volunteers from our community and well beyond.

It's hard to imagine that any one person can make a significant difference in making our planet greener. But when we work together the impact grows exponentially. reducing our use of plastic items such as cups, straws, packaging, bags and bottles will impact the amount of the garbage that ends up in our environment and it's a lot easier than you might think! Try some of these plastic-reducing ideas on for size:

  • Carry re-usable cloth bags in your car - use them at the grocery as well as the department store
  • Buy a stainless steel water bottle
  • Carry re-usable silverware, cups and take out containers
  • Ask your local restaurant to serve you on real plates
  • Buy in bulk and refill containers

  • Gift wrap with fabric or newspaper
  • Drop off old items and shop at thrift stores
  • Buy items with minimal packaging
  • Use rechargeable batteries
  • If it's broken, fix it - don't toss it!
